Everyone needs a boost in the mornings. Getting into the habit of having a healthy smoothie when you wake up, will make a huge difference.

A quick search will give you hundreds of different recipes for a healthy smoothie, but today I’d like to share with you 3 ideas, that are perfect for the beginning of your day. Each of the following recipes will provide two glasses of Smoothie.

All three recipes contain mixed berries. On their own, berries are a pretty super food and have loads of health benefits….

  • They’re loaded with antioxidants.
  • They may help improve blood sugar and insulin response.
  • They provide many nutrients, including vitamin C and K.
  • The antioxidants in them help fight inflammation.
  • They may help lower cholesterol levels.
  • They may be good for your skin.
  • The Antioxidants in berries may help protect against cancer.
  • They can be enjoyed on nearly all types of diet.
  • They may help keep your arteries healthy.
  • They’re also an excellent source of fibre, folic acid and potassium.

and each one of these three recipes, has a little something extra!

Breakfast Berries Smoothie

The first recipe, adds rolled oats (porridge oats) to the fruit smoothie. Adding Oats is a great way to add extra fibre to your smoothie without adding a ton of calories.

There are three great ways of adding the oats, depending on your tastes.

  1. You can either chuck them in the blender with the other ingredients.
  2. Blend the oats first, then add them to the smoothie once the fruit, yogurt and milk has been blended.
  3. Soak the oats beforehand for at least an hour in milk, or water, then add them to the Smoothie (this softens them and gives your smoothie a smoother texture).

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups of fat-free strawberry yogurt (or another flavour if you prefer)
1/2 cup of semi-skimmed milk
2 tablespoons of rolled oats
1 teaspoon of honey (optional) 

Method:
Use a blender to mix the berries, yogurt , milk and oats together until smooth. Then pour into 2 glasses and serve with a drizzle of honey, if you like.

 

Fruit Explosion Smoothie

In this smoothie, as well as the berries, you add a medium sized, ripe banana and a 1/4 cup of orange juice. The banana adds around 425mg of potassium (approximately 12% of your daily required intake) and the orange juice contains around 25mg of vitamin C.

Ingredients:

1 frozen ripe banana
1 1/2 cups low-fat vanilla yoghurt
1/2 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Method:
Use a blender to mix all the ingredients together.
Then pour into 2 glasses and serve with a drizzle of honey, if you like.

 

Berry and Apple Refresher

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups apple juice
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon honey (optional)

Method:
Use a blender to mix all the ingredients together.
Then pour into 2 glasses and serve with a drizzle of honey, if you like.

With any of these smoothies, you could add cashew nuts, or almonds for additional flavour.
